How to Get Married in New York City

From obtaining your marriage license to exchanging vows at an iconic New York location, this guide explains the steps involved in planning a legal NYC wedding or elopement.

Ultimate USA Weddings helps make the process feel clear, manageable, and beautifully supported, especially for couples planning from another state or country.

Getting married in NYC is easier when the process is clear. Your marriage license, waiting period, ceremony, required signatures, and post-wedding paperwork follow a straightforward sequence when each part is planned in the right order.

A New York Wedding Starts With the Marriage License

You do not have to live in New York to marry here. Couples who reside in another U.S. state or another country are welcome to get married in New York City.

Both members of the couple participate in the marriage-license process. A valid passport from any country is among the identification documents currently accepted by the New York City Clerk.

No NYC Residency Required Couples from another state or country may marry in New York City.
$35 License Fee The current New York City marriage-license fee is $35.
Usually Valid for 60 Days The license is generally valid for 60 days after it is issued.
24-Hour Waiting Period The ceremony normally takes place at least 24 hours after the license is issued.

Your NYC Marriage Process

The process is straightforward when your wedding date, City Clerk appointment, waiting period, ceremony, and completed paperwork are arranged in the right order.

Choose Your Wedding Date & Location

Begin with the experience you want: a quiet Central Park ceremony, an iconic Brooklyn Bridge backdrop, a skyline wedding at Top of the Rock, or a rooftop-garden celebration at 620 Loft & Garden.

Your guest count, season, accessibility needs, photography plans, and preferred ceremony time will help shape the right location, package, and wedding-day timeline.

Complete the Marriage-License Application

The application can currently be started online. You and your future spouse then schedule an in-person City Clerk appointment or an eligible virtual appointment through Project Cupid.

The online application currently expires after 21 days. Review names, dates, prior-marriage information, and spelling before the ceremony so corrections can be addressed in advance.

Attend Your Marriage-License Appointment

Both members of the couple need proper identification, any required supporting documents, and payment. A valid passport from any country is currently accepted.

The current New York City marriage-license fee is $35, and the license is usually valid for 60 days.

Complete the Required Waiting Period

New York State generally requires at least 24 hours between the marriage license being issued and the ceremony unless a judicial waiver is granted.

If you are traveling to New York, leave comfortable room for the appointment, waiting period, possible travel disruptions, and wedding-day preparation.

Hold Your Wedding Ceremony

Your ceremony may take place at a City Clerk office or elsewhere in New York with an authorized officiant and at least one witness.

Ultimate USA Weddings packages can include a registered New York wedding officiant and a ceremony created around your story and preferred tone. After the ceremony, the couple, officiant, and witness or witnesses sign the marriage license.

Return & Process the Marriage License

The officiant returns the completed marriage license to the City Clerk office that issued it. Current New York City guidance says it should be returned within five business days.

The Certificate of Marriage Registration is then issued or mailed through the City Clerk process. For use abroad, additional certified documents, authentication, an apostille, or other paperwork may be requested.

Choose the New York Setting That Fits Your Day

Your ceremony location affects guest flow, privacy, walking, accessibility, weather planning, photography, permits or venue procedures, and the overall feeling of the wedding.

Your Ceremony Can Feel Completely Personal

The legal requirements create the framework, but the ceremony can still feel unmistakably yours.

Couples can choose a City Clerk ceremony or marry elsewhere in New York with an authorized officiant. Ultimate USA Weddings packages can include a registered New York wedding officiant and ceremony wording shaped around your relationship, preferred tone, and the way you want the moment to feel.

What Happens After the Ceremony?

Once the vows are complete, the signed marriage license still needs to be returned and processed. The next document you need may also depend on where the marriage record will be used.

Return & Registration

The marriage officiant returns the completed license to the same City Clerk borough office that issued it. Current City guidance requires the return within five business days.

After the City Clerk processes the completed license, the Certificate of Marriage Registration is issued through the City Clerk process. If the ceremony takes place outside a City Clerk office, the certificate is mailed.

Before the ceremony, review the marriage license carefully. New York City instructs couples to correct license errors before the ceremony takes place.

Using Your Marriage Record Abroad

International couples may be asked for a marriage record prepared for foreign use, county certification, an apostille, a certificate of authentication, a translation, or other supporting documentation.

There is no single document requirement that applies in every country or to every government office, employer, bank, pension provider, immigration authority, or other organization.

For international use, confirm the document requirements with the authority that will receive the record. An apostille should not be treated as automatically required for every couple.
